Pop Art Shader

Project Type

Art, Unity Engine

Date

Ever wonder how to give 3D objects that bold, retro pop art look? I created this custom shader that transforms regular objects into vibrant pop art pieces, capturing that iconic 90s aesthetic. The shader plays with bold outlines, vivid colors, and those classic halftone dot patterns that you might remember from old comic books and vintage posters.

What is Pop Art?

Pop Art, short for Popular Art, also known as New Realism or Neo-Dadaism, is an art style that challenges tradition, promotes popular culture, and reflects everyday life. Pop Art was the most important and widespread modern art movement of the 1960s and 1970s, pioneering new artistic themes and creative techniques, blurring the boundaries between art and life, and becoming one of the earliest postmodern art movements. Design Characteristic:

vibrant colors, high saturation, high contrast;

Design Background:

I created this shader because I find this art style fascinating, and I have previously recreated this style using traditional art media—Risograph printing. Interestingly, I believe the concept of this style aligns well with shaders. The philosophy behind this style is often explained in art criticism using Walter Benjamin's The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction, which promotes the idea of mass-producible electronic art

Design Documentation:

Pop Art Shader can stylize objects with a pop art effect. The objects will primarily be divided into three sections based on light and shadow, allowing the user to customize the size of the different shadow areas and the density of the dot pattern. Additionally, this shader can adjust the object's original material colors to achieve the vibrant color effect characteristic of pop art.
